What Harm is in our Sun Dance?
If you haven't yet, review the description of the Sun Dance found in the document attached to the Lakota Religion page. Remember that the Sun Dance is a ritual which marks the beginning of summer, celebrates the new year, and in the past helped prepare for the annual buffalo hunt. Some dancers skewer their chests, attaching themselves to a symbolic central tree. They face the sun and dance away from the tree until their flesh tears, offering that pain as a sacrifice to the Great Spirit. During the late 1800s, the Sun Dance was outlawed because it was seen as physically and politically dangerous. |
Now read a more detailed description of the Sun Dance found here: http://aktalakota.stjo.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=8668&news_iv_ctrl=0 Then read the attached response of one Native American to the United States' banning of the Sun Dance.
Respond to the poll below indicating whether or not you agree with the Sun Dance being banned and why.
